Bar Design Essentials: From Layout to Atmosphere
Creating bars that work for bartenders and enchant guests.
A great bar balances two demands: operational efficiency and magnetic atmosphere. Here's how we approach bar design at Belenko.
The Bar Counter
Dimensions Matter
- Height: 110-120cm for standing bars, 90-100cm for seated
- Depth: Minimum 60cm top, 45cm working side
- Overhang: 20-30cm for guest comfort
Material Considerations
The bar top takes abuse. We prefer:
- Natural stone (granite, marble) — timeless but requires sealing
- Zinc — develops beautiful patina
- Solid surface — practical, seamless
- Wood with marine-grade finish — warm but high maintenance
Back Bar Design
The back bar is your display. We design for:
- Visual hierarchy: Premium bottles at eye level, lit dramatically
- Accessibility: Everything within arm's reach
- Storage integration: Glasses, tools, backup stock
Lighting the Bar
Bars need different lighting than dining areas:
- Under-bar LED strips for work illumination
- Back bar shelving with integrated lighting
- Pendant lights over the counter for ambiance
- Dimmer controls for transitioning through service
Signature Projects
Saint Bar: We created an intimate speakeasy atmosphere with dark wood paneling, brass details, and strategic low lighting. The bar itself features a custom zinc top that ages beautifully.
Ladies Room: A hidden bar concept in Istanbul where the entrance experience is as designed as the bar itself. Mysterious, intimate, unforgettable.
12 Monkeys: Red velvet, brass, and dramatic chandeliers create old-world glamour. The curved bar becomes a social hub.
The best bars tell a story. Every material, light, and detail should reinforce your concept.
